Camping Lake Monument / Turkiye, Konya

Meke Lake

Meke Maar Lake is a lake in the Karapınar district of Konya, which became its current state when a maar formed as a result of a volcanic gas explosion filled with water and has islets in the middle. It is 2 km inland from the turn on the 7th km of the Karapınar-Ereğli road on the Karapınar Plain. The lake and primary maar are 800 meters long and 500 meters wide. The lake is 12 meters deep. The lake takes its name from the meke birds living in the area.

This maar, which was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption 4-5 million years ago, turned into a lake by filling with water over time, and then, 9000 years ago, a volcanic cone in the middle of the lake was formed with a second volcanic eruption.

Lake Meke is at an altitude of 981 m above sea level. Located in the middle of the Main Meke and 50 m above the water level, the lake in the volcanic cone is 25 m deep and its water is salty. Meke Maar was included in the list of the Ramsar Convention in 2005.
