Midyat Caves
Midyat Caves, located in Akçakaya locality in Midyat district, is 65 km from the city center. Transportation is provided via the D-380. Natural caves have been important places for people to live and hide throughout history. The caves that developed in parallel with the rock culture in Mardin also have a special place in the history of the city. The interiors of the Midyat caves have now been converted into a museum, offering ample opportunity to observe the life here. Midyat is mentioned as a city of caves in the Assyrian tables in the 9th century BC. It was also used by the Urartians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans in the following years. Midyat Caves, which have been used since the beginning of life in the region, have now been converted into a museum run by the municipality.
