Lower Kayabasi Church

Aşağıkayabaşı-Begüm Mosque: The basilica-planned church in the Aşağıkayabaşı neighborhood was built of basalt cut stone. The main worship part is divided into three courts with 8 symmetrical columns and the middle court is larger than the side courts. The stairs on the right side of the entrance on the west façade lead to the balcony. In the east of the church, which has a long rectangular plan, there is an apse with three iwan sections, one large in the center and two smaller ones on both sides. Geometric ornaments are seen on the saddle-shaped ceiling and on the inner parts of the arches connecting the columns.

The church is generally well preserved internally and externally. The church is accessed by stairs from the main road and is used as a mosque. The front and two side parts are porticoed and the porticoes are covered with barrel vaults and painted in yellow, blue and tile colors. There is a cross around the door and there is a Greek inscription dated 1835 on the entrance door. In addition, the decorations made on both sides and the upper side of the door are covered with whitewash today. It is popularly called Begüm Mosque. It is generally well preserved but there are spills on the ceiling and frescoes.
