Ağrı Carpet and Rug Weaving

Due to the harsh winter conditions in Ağrı, wool-based weaving generally continues according to tradition on hand looms during these months. The popular name for the rug is Yemeni. Rug and carpet weaving are the most important handicrafts in Ağrı. Carpets, pillows, saddlebags, wool socks and sweaters, mohair gloves, socks and quilts are also among the handicrafts based on wool and knitting. In the province where animal husbandry is common and dominant, the yarn obtained from the wool of the Morkaraman breed sheep is made ready to be woven on home looms after going through many processes. The best yarns are obtained from these Karaman breed sheep. Except for courses and carpet weaving workshops, carpets and rugs in Ağrı are mostly woven on vertical rotating floor looms without clamps.
