Comb Making
In the past, people used combs made of bone to comb their hair, as there were not as many types of combs as there are today. With the developing industry in recent years, our art of carding, like many handicrafts, is about to become history.
The construction phase of a comb is as follows; Buffalo horns are bought from the butcher. If the horn is wet, it is dried. It is cut transversely within the comb size. It is polished, chipped and smoothed. This time it is cut lengthwise to make it ready for stretching. It is placed in a container with water. After boiling in water, it is kept on fire. thus the softened horn is stretched open. then clamped in a vise. The horn cooled by this compression just freezes and does not bend again. The horn taken from the vise is cut into a square shape and polished. Thus, it is adjusted to the comb size. After that, the thick teeth of the comb are cut with a saw, and then the thin teeth of the comb are cut with a bristle saw. After this process is finished, the surface and teeth of the comb are smoothed and sharpened with a rasp. The surface is scraped again with piece glasses. Finally, the comb is given shine and polish with pelite ash. As you can see, at least 18 operations are required for a comb.
