Kastamonu and its districts are very rich in terms of traditional handicrafts. Although migration to cities, technological developments, fast and cheap production cause some of the handicrafts to disappear, it is seen that traditional handicrafts are still active in Kastamonu and its districts. Needlework is one of these professions.Needlework was born from the combination of flower and knitting art. Embroidery made from a colored thread or a suitable thread with a needle, usually in the form of flowers and leaves, is called needle lace.Needle laces are knitted by knotting with small needles. Needle lace is the process of attaching the knots (loops) side by side or on top of each other by pulling the needle through the yarn loop formed by winding the yarn on the needle. It is made by wrapping the thread on the needle once or twice.Various techniques are used in needle lace. These techniques differ from region to region. Some of these techniques are porous loop (triangle), non-porous loop (square), root, cirdik, fiskal, handrail, mustache, pipe. Embroidery made; They are called by various names such as giraffe, nightingale saliva, berry lace, fly wing, rocks. Today, with the development of technology, various threads resembling silk are used. Needle laces made using real silk require fine workmanship. Hair, horse hair or thin wire are attached to the necessary places to ensure that the motifs stand upright in this type of lace made by knotting the threads with small needles. After the lace is finished, it is hardened by applying tragacanth, gum or egg white.Although the application areas of needle lace vary, they are mostly used on tulle, prayer cover, room sets, writing and scarf edges.
