Pottery

It is understood from the excavations that pottery started to develop with the settlement of nomadic tribes. The first pottery made in Anatolia dates back to the 'Neolithic' period, approximately BC. It dates back to the 7000's. It is understood that the pottery of the first period was shaped by hand with the wrap-wrap method, and the firing was generally done on an open fire. B.C. With the discovery of the potter's wheel in the 3000s, the shaping process on the wheel began. In the same period, primitive kilns were started to be used for cooking the soil.

It is understood from the archaeological findings unearthed in the excavations that İzmir and its surroundings (Bayraklı, Urla, Foça, Samos Island) are an important ceramic center. Among the reasons for the development of pottery in this region is the richness of the soil structure in terms of potter's clay, which is a raw material suitable for making pottery. Another reason is the need for containers to be used to store wine due to viticulture and olive oil due to olive cultivation. Today, pottery is highly developed in the Menemen district. The clayey soil, which is obtained from the region and suitable for making pottery, is turned into mud in special ponds, filtered and cleaned, then dried until it reaches a certain consistency and shaped by hand on the wheel. The pots fired in special ovens are glazed to prevent water leakage.
