Karakaya Dam
Karakaya Dam was built within the borders of Cüngüş district of Diyarbakır province, on the Euphrates River, between 1976-1987 for the purpose of generating electricity as a part of the Southeastern Anatolia Project. With the construction of the dam, many villages were evacuated.
The dam, which is 150 km away from Diyarbakır, took its name from the nearby Karakaya Village.
The body volume of the dam, which is a concrete arch body weight type, is 2.000.000 m³, its height from the river bed is 173.00 m, the lake volume at normal water level is 9.580.00 hm³, and the lake area at normal water level is 268.00 km². The dam produces 7,354 GWh of electrical energy annually with a power of 1,800 MW.
There are currently two active bridges over the Karakaya Dam Lake. Kömürhan Bridge and İsmet Paşa Railway Bridge. In addition, the old ones of these bridges were under water due to the impoundment of the dam.
