Birecik
Birecik is a district center of the province of Şanlıurfa with a population of 96,000 in the Middle Euphrates section of the Southeastern Anatolia Region. While it used to be only on the east bank of the Euphrates, it was established on both banks in recent years, at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level. Birecik is 83 km from Şanlıurfa and 63 km from Gaziantep. The houses are spread over a narrow plain along the river and a steep slope rising behind it - "Yeşildağ" among the people. There is also a castle on this slope. From the point where Birecik is located, the Euphrates is suitable for small-scale river transport downstream. For this reason, Birecik has gained importance as a transfer point between land and river transportation since ancient times. ] The construction of the Birecik Bridge, which started in 1951 and ended in 1956, increased the importance of the town again.
