Gülnar
Gülnar is a district of Mersin Province. It is a Turkmen highland city established on the Taşeli Plateau, at an altitude of 950 m in the Taurus Mountains. It is 32 km from the Mediterranean Sea.
History
The history of Gülnar dates back to the Hittites. Later, the Assyrians dominated the region. Gülnar, who remained under the rule of Iran and Egyptians for a short time, later came under the rule of the Ancient Romans. Today's people of Gulnar are Turkmens who migrated from Gulnar on the shores of Balkas Lake in Central Asia in 1230 and settled in this area. The ancestors of the nomads, who were forced to migrate from their homeland, came to Mersin (Icel) region and settled in Mersin (Icel) by giving great wars and struggles under the leadership of Gülnar Hatun. The nomads became the settlers and founders of the present Gulnar district, by giving the name of their leader, Gulnar Hatun, who gave his life for his nation by leading them to come from Central Asia to this place, which is the name of the region they came from Central Asia.
In 1461, Gülnar, along with Silifke and Mut, joined the Ottoman administration by Gedik Ahmet Pasha, one of the commanders of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. While Adana was the governorship, Silifke governorship, Gilindire (Aydıncık) district, Zeyne (Sütlüce) sub-district in the 1900s, Gülnar is a village (also called Anaypazarı) where the nomads trade. The district administrators, who went to Gülnar plateau from Gilindire (Aydıncık) during the summer months, wanted Gülnar to be a district. With a ceremony held on June 3, 1916, Gülnar officially became a district.
Geographical Structure
Gulnar; It is surrounded by Silifke in the east, Anamur and Bozyazı in the west, Mut in the north, Karaman in the northwest and Aydıncık in the south. Gülnar is a town with a coast on the Mediterranean. It is located on the Taşeli Plateau, 150 km from the center of Mersin, in the southwest of Mersin.
