Güroymak

Güroymak is a district of Bitlis province. The former name of the settlement was "Norşin" and in 1987 the name of the district was changed to Güroymak. Norşin is an Armenian word in origin. It means Nor-Şen/Şin-New-Village. The lands where the district is located have shared the same political fate with the Plain of Muş throughout history, it was subject to the Mamigonyan Armenian Principality in the 4th to 9th centuries, the Bagratuni Armenian kingdom between 825 and 967, and shortly after it came under Byzantine rule in 967, it came under the dominance of Mervani emirs based in Diyarbakır. After the Turkish invasions, Norşin was dominated by the Dilmaçoğlu and Sökmenli principalities, which ruled in Ahlat for a while, then remained under the rule of the Şerefhanoğlu principalities in Bitlis. In this process, it is understood that the former Armenian population of the district and its surroundings gradually became Kurdish. The town of Norşin became the center of the township called "Çukur" in 1926. The town, which gained the name of Güroymak in 1960, gained the status of a district with the law numbered 3392 published in the Official Gazette dated 4 July 1987 and numbered 19507. During the visit of 11th President Abdullah Gül in August 2009, when the district was mentioned as Norşîn, it came to the fore that the district would take its old name, and in the same year, the decision to name the settlement Norşin was presented to the Ministry of Interior in the Municipal Assembly. However, the name of the settlement has not changed in the meantime.
