İskilip

İskilip is a district of Çorum province. It is also used as the name of a historical geography. During the Hittites period, the region where İskilip and Tosya district of Kastamonu were located was called Tarittara or Turmitta. Later on, it was also called with different names such as Iskila, Blocium/Bloacium, Iskelib, Iskelib, Imad. After the Ottoman period Kanuni, it was also referred to as Esculape in Western, especially French sources. Historically, the word İskilip was first used in the form of "iškila-bi" in the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the Sumerian epics.
