Maltepe
Maltepe is a district on the Anatolian side of Istanbul province, on the coast of the Marmara Sea. Maltepe, which is adjacent to Kadıköy, Kartal, Sancaktepe and Ataşehir districts, is the ninth largest district of Istanbul and the fourth largest district of the Anatolian Side in terms of population. The name Maltepe means a hill like a Mound or Tumulus where treasures and jars of gold are piled up. After the conquest of the Kocaeli Peninsula by the Turks, the Turks gave this name based on several legends about Dragos. Maltepe's history can be traced back to the Byzantine Empire. It is said that his name in those times was Bryas or Urias in Latin. According to other information, this place was called Pelekanon in the history of the Byzantines. Although it is stated by historians that the name Bryas was taken from the ruins of Bryas Palace located near the old Akduman Spring in Küçükyalı, there is no definitive evidence for this. The foundations of today's Maltepe district were laid in the 16th century. The figure used in the municipality's logo was inspired by the Monument of Virgins, which was once in the sea but is now on land after the sea was filled.
