Sancaktepe

Sancaktepe is a district on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. It gained district status in 2008. It neighbors Kartal in the south, Maltepe in the southwest, Ataşehir and Ümraniye in the west, Çekmeköy in the north, and Pendik and Sultanbeyli districts in the east. The district is 62.41 square kilometers, its population is 414,143 and there are a total of 19 neighborhoods within its borders. It emerged with the combination of Sarıgazi, Yenidoğan and Samandıra towns of Kartal, affiliated with Ümraniye. District governorship and new municipality buildings were built in the center of Sarıgazi. It is planned to build one of the largest city hospitals in Turkey and Europe within the district borders.[2] The connection roads of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge pass within the borders of this district. While the town hall is in Sarıgazi; It was moved to the New Municipality Building, Samandıra, in January 2018.[3] It is also planned to pass a metro line within the district borders. In the 2019 local elections, AK Party's candidate Şeyma Döğücü was elected Mayor. Sancaktepe district was established by Law No. 5747, which came into force after being published in the Official Gazette No. 26824 dated March 22, 2008, by merging Sarıgazi and Yenidoğan towns of Ümraniye District and Samandıra town of Kartal District and abolishing their legal entities.
