Sarayköy

Although the exact date of establishment of Sarayköy district is not known, XIV. It is estimated that it was founded by the Turkmen tribal chief Sarıbey towards the end of the century. The name of the village, which Sarıbey founded under his own name, later underwent various changes and turned into today's Sarayköy. After the Denizli liva was transformed into a district in 1867, it preserved its feature of being a subdivision of Denizli.

On May 15, 1919, when the Greeks occupied İzmir and advanced towards Aydın, Nazilli and Sarayköy, the Sarayköy Delegation took action without delay. Mufti Ahmet Şükrü Yavuzyılmaz gathered everyone who could hold a gun in and around Sarayköy. Thanks to this initiative, the volunteer force gathered, protecting the Menderes Bridge and its surroundings, prevented the enemy from advancing and entering Denizli. An ephesus statue was erected to commemorate this day and for the heroism of the patriots of Sarayköy, and this statue has become the symbol of Sarayköy. Every year, on May 24, this meaningful and enthusiastic event is celebrated with festivities throughout the district as “Sarayköy's Participation Day in the National Struggle”.
