Sarıkaya

Sarıkaya is a district of Yozgat province. It is 79 km from the city center.

Sarıkaya is located within the establishment area of the Hittite Empire, which established the first political union in Anatolia. The mounds, which are the documents of this period, are frequently encountered in the villages of Sarıkaya. After the Hittites, this region was occupied by the Assyrians and then by Alexander and was taken by the Romans, presumably in the 1st century BC.

In addition to historical ruins and artifacts from the Roman period, many written documents are also found in Sarıkaya. Sarıkaya was a city called Opel with 7000 houses during the Roman period. It is said that the spa ruins of the Roman period in the district, which is famous for its hot springs, were built for the daughter of one of the Roman Kings. In Sarikaya, the remains of walls built with large stones from the Romans, the foundations of the city walls, columns and column capitals are frequently encountered in excavations.
