It is at the intersection of the Black Sea Region and the Eastern Anatolia Region. It is located 185 km northeast of Erzurum city center. It is adjacent to Göle in the north, Sarıkamış in the east, Oltu in the west and Olur in the northwest. Major elevations of the district; There are Allahuekber Mountains in the east, Kırdağ in the west, Çember Mountains in the south and Çağrı Mountains in the north. The district center is located at the foot of the Soğanlı Mountains and Allahuekber Mountains. Forested lands are seen more intensely in the north-northeast part of the district. The district has very large pastures and meadows.
