Şile

Şile is a district of Istanbul province. It is in the northeast of the Marmara Region, on the Black Sea coast. It is surrounded by Kandıra in the east, Derince and Körfez in the southeast, Pendik and Gebze in the south, Çekmeköy in the southwest and Beykoz in the west. According to Bijişkyan, an Armenian priest from Trabzon who traveled throughout the Black Sea region in the early 19th century and wrote his memoirs, the word Hilea in Greek texts is related to the Greek word "lips", and according to Özhan Öztürk, it is called Şile due to the pronunciation of the Greek /H/ sound as /Ş/ in Pontic Greek. was pronounced. Öztürk also claimed that the Psilis stream, mentioned in the notes of Pliny the Elder and Ptolemaus and flowing into this bay where small ships took shelter, was the source of the name Şile. Settlement in the district dates back to ancient times. It shows that the Şile area was inhabited in prehistory (Polished Stone Age). In prehistoric studies carried out on the Black Sea coast between Kefken and the Bulgarian border, many mansions and workshops belonging to various parts of the Paleolithic age and especially the Epi-Paleolithic period were identified in various places. From the increase in the number of find sites it is clear that there was a significant population density on the Black Sea coastline in the post-glacial period (between approximately 12000 and 6000 BC). As a matter of fact, among the oldest finds in Istanbul are the Ağva and Sahilköy (Domalı) villages of Şile. Sahilköy, one of the coastal mansions on the Marmara coast that includes Ambarlı, is located to the west of the sandy area in the north of the bay of the same name. Chipped stone tools from Sahilköy were collected on Dereağzı Hill, which coincides with the east of Göztepe and Kazlar streams. In addition, there are many caves in the district that were suitable for the life of people of that period.
