Sungurlu region, after being under the rule of Assyrians, Hittites, Phrygians, Cimmerians, Mongols, Alexander, Galatians respectively, passed into the hands of the Romans and then the Byzantines. After the Anatolian gates were opened to the Turks in the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, Sungurlu and its region were taken from the Byzantines by Danishment Ahmet Gazi and passed under the rule and sovereignty of the Turks. Like many regions of Anatolia, this region also bears the traces of various cultural civilizations that have existed since the early ages. Although the first settlements in the region were in the Chalcolithic period, the development of civilization took place in later years. Hattis, one of the indigenous tribes living in Anatolia between 1800 BC and 1200 BC, made this region an important settlement center. Later, the Hittites, who dominated the region, made Hattusha the capital.
