Sur

Sur is one of the four central districts of Diyarbakır. It was established in 2008, within the borders of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, in the oldest settlement of Diyarbakır. Sur took its name from the historical Diyarbakır city walls surrounded by the district center.

Sur district, which is located in the middle part of the Southeastern Anatolia Region, was founded on the lava of Karacadağ, on the edge of the Tigris River, at an altitude of 660 meters from the sea. It is possible to come across the traces left by the great civilizations that dominated the district and many historical artifacts all over the district.

historical background; It dates back to ancient times, around 7500 BC. In recent archaeological excavations, it has been seen that the oldest settlements in the world are in this region.

Hurrians, Mitannies, Hittites, Assyrians, Medes, Persians, Alexander the Great, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuk Dynasty, Ottomans and nearly 30 civilizations ruled in the district, respectively.

The district has been the settlement and center of different civilizations and civilizations with its rich historical and cultural background, bearing the traces of many civilizations. The district has always managed to preserve its feature of being a historical and cultural center. Each civilization has presented its own culture to the new generations as an "Open Air Inscriptions Museum" by fusing it with the previous ones and making it richer.
