Weeping Sycamore (Ağlayan Çınar)

The name of this village, where Greeks were in the majority, was Apolyont. A Turk living in the village named Mehmet and a Greek girl named Eleni fell in love with each other. They used to meet in the hollow of this plane tree all the time. During the years of the War of Independence, it was time to evacuate the Greek villages and bring the Turks to those villages. Seeing the brothers of Eleni, one of the Greeks who left Apolyont, Mehmet said that he was looking for Eleni. His brothers told Mehmet not to complicate the job and to forget about Eleni. Mehmet resisted and a fight broke out. Eleni's brother Yorgi stabbed Mehmet. With the knife marks, Mehmet went to the hollow of the plane tree. Meanwhile, a very close girlfriend of Eleni, one of the Greeks who left the village, told her that Mehmet had a fight with his brother. Eleni then left the convoy and went to the plane tree. Also, his body was covered in blood, Mehmet died. Then Eleni committed suicide there. It is rumored that some periods, these periods do not have a clear date, drops of blood flowed from the plane tree. That's why this tree remained as a Crying Sycamore.
