Bingol Mountains
Bingol Mountains (Bingol Mountain) is a shield-shaped extinct volcano in Eastern Anatolia. The Upper Miocene-Pliocene aged mountain extends NW-SE. Its height is 3193 m, length is 50-55 km, width is 30-35 km, and area is 1500 km2. The mountain takes its name from the abundance of lakes formed by Pleistocene glaciation. 1/3 of the mountain is located in Bingöl and the rest in Muş and Erzurum.
The caldera edges of Bingol Mountain and the plateaus at 2650-2800 m altitude have been glaciated. Cirques and valley glaciers have covered large areas and the appearance of a cover glacier has been formed. The plateaus are covered with moraine deposits. Lakes formed as a result of glaciation gave the mountain its name. There are at least 72 lakes on the mountain, large enough to be recorded on maps. There are more than this number of small lakes and countless seasonal lakes on the cover moraines. There are no current glaciers on the mountain. It is estimated that the current glacier limit is around 3600-3700 m. The main structure of the mountain consists of andesite and basalt. The southern slopes are steep and the slope is gentle on the northern slopes.
