Murad II Complex – Sultan Tombs

The Murad II Complex (Turkish: II. Murad Külliyesi), also known as the Muradiye Complex, is a historic Ottoman architectural complex located in Bursa, Turkey. Commissioned by Ottoman sultan Murad II in the 15th century, the complex is especially renowned for its Sultan Tombs (Sultan Türbeleri), which contain the mausoleums of Ottoman rulers and members of the imperial family.

History

The Murad II Complex was constructed in the mid-15th century, during the reign of Sultan Murad II, one of the key figures in the consolidation period of the Ottoman Empire. Following the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed II, Bursa retained its significance as a dynastic burial center. As a result, members of the Ottoman royal family continued to be buried in Bursa, particularly within the Muradiye Complex.

Murad II Tomb

The Tomb of Murad II is the most prominent structure within the complex. In accordance with the sultan’s will, the mausoleum was built with an open roof, symbolizing humility and allowing rain to fall directly onto the grave. This architectural feature makes the tomb unique among Ottoman royal mausoleums.
