Afyonkarahisar Castle
Hittite Emperor II in 1350 BC. Afyonkarahisar Castle, which was built during the reign of Murşil, is one of the symbolic structures of Afyon. The castle was built for protection, observation and defense; It is located on a volcanic rock mass at an altitude of 226 meters. Afyonkarahisar Castle, which witnessed the Hittite, Phrygian, Roman and Byzantine periods and gained the importance it deserves in the Seljuk Period, has been continuing its existence for 3359 years. The castle, which was called Hopanuva, which means "Yuksektepe City" when it was first built, was called Karahisar Castle in the Seljuk Period and was named Afyonkarahisar Castle, which was its final form in the Ottoman Period. Eight water cisterns, cellars, warehouses, arsenals and cellars where valuables are kept in the castle, built by the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubat, fascinate everyone who sees them. Because it is possible to see the most beautiful examples reflecting the architecture of the Islamic period in the castle.
