Akçakale Castle

It is known that the castle, which takes its visitors on a historical journey with its originality, proximity to the sea and beautiful view, was built with rubble and cut stones. The castle, built with rubble and cut stones, still maintains its originality, although many parts of it have been destroyed. The castle, built at a point overlooking the sea and in the Akçakale District, has a history of approximately 750 years. It is thought that Veli Mahmut Pasha, one of the commanders of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, was martyred in Akçakale Castle, which is thought to have hosted many civilizations, in the light of the graves found here. In the archaeological excavations carried out in the castle in cooperation with Akçaabat Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 100 coins, 30 slings, 4 cannonballs, 10 bronze objects, 1 stone trough, 5 soldier uniform buttons, 15 pipes belonging to the Hellenistic Period, Late Antique, Ottoman and Byzantine periods were found. , 2 arrowheads, 2 talismanic objects, 1 silver ring, incomplete bone fragments, graves, skeletons and a 19th century cannon and church foundation were found. In addition, the cemetery chapel, the main entrance gate of the castle, and the special unit space were identified to the south of the church found during the Akçakale Castle excavations, and the connection routes within the castle were unearthed. Excavations at Akçakale Castle have been completed. The castle is in the preparation phase for restoration work.
