Alçak Bridge

It was built during the Roman Period to connect the castle and its surroundings, which was the city center of the time, to the opposite shore of Yeşilırmak, that is, to the settlement of the city. These high legs of the bridge, which was built with smooth cut stones to form four high arches, were buried in the rising bed of Yeşilırmak in time, and only the upper parts of the arches remained visible. Since the bridge deck on the arches approached the water surface, the people named the bridge as the "Low Bridge" as we still use it today.

Mutasarrıf Ziya Pasha, who thought that the bridge, which was used in this form until the 19th century, could pose a danger, had a new 11-foot wooden bridge built on these low arches of the bridge in 1865. However, this new bridge did not last very long, and it was lost in the waters of Yeşilırmak in the flood of 1881. During the reign of Governor Atıf Bey, a new bridge was built over the old arches once again, and this new bridge was built more solidly than the previous wooden bridge. This second bridge, which was built by making use of the stones of an unused church, was strengthened a little more in 1965 and has survived to the present day.
