Anemurium Ancient City

Mersin province Anamur district takes its name from the ancient city of Anemurium. The ruins of this city are in the Anamur district, on the Anamur Cape, which is the southernmost point of Anatolia. In ancient times, Strabo mentioned the city of Anemurium in his writings. In the 19th century, the city was explored by the English captain Francis Beaufort, who came to the region with the task of mapping the Mediterranean coast. Beaufort describes both the castle of the city and the ancient artifacts in the castle in his book Karamania. In the 20th century, the city was explored by Canadian archaeologists. Elisabeth Alföldi of the University of Toronto in 1960 and James Russell from the University of British Columbia in 1998 conducted surveys. Among the numismatic data and archaeological findings in the excavations, fishing tools, construction, tailor, potter's tools, coins, lead seal, weighbridge weight, weaving tools, keys, locks, game and entertainment tools, razors, make-up materials, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, gold belt buckles were found.
