Arabahmet Mosque

Arabahmet Mosque, also known as Arap Ahmed Pasha Mosque or Ahmed Pasha Mosque, is a mosque located in the northern part of Nicosia. It is located in Arabahmet Neighborhood. Before the Ottoman period, there was a church in the place of the mosque. Although the structure of this church has not survived, various elements such as tombstones have survived. Christopher Schabel argues that the Arabahmet Mosque was historically a church affiliated with the Carmelite order in its place. Although the Sarayönü Mosque was thought to be in place in earlier research, various findings revealed that this was not true. It is understood from the account of a Carmelite traveler who came to Nicosia at the end of the 15th century that the Carmelite Church must have been near the Paphos Gate. In one of the reports of the Venetian administration, which demolished the Nicosia walls built by the Lusignans in the 16th century and rebuilt the city by shrinking its surroundings, it is written that the new walls will rise "above" the Carmelite church of Mula Bastion. According to Schabel, the location of the Arabahmet Mosque is consistent with these documents.
