Artuqid Palace

The Artuqid Palace is the palace built within the Diyarbakir Walls during the reign of Nasreddin Mohammed (1200-1222), the Bey of the Diyarbakir branch of the Artuqid Principality. The palace was used for various purposes until the 16th century, but over time it was buried under a hill called Virantepe today. Part of the mound was built in 1961 by art historian Prof. It was excavated by Oktay Aslanapa and valuable finds were unearthed. Although most of the palace remains are still buried, preparatory works for excavation and restoration are carried out.

Artuqid Palace is also the place where the Islamic scholar and inventor Al-Jazari worked for 30 years and inspired many of his designs and inventions.
