Aziz Philippus Bridge
In the eastern part of the Hierapolis Ancient City, just after the St. Philippus Gate, there is a large bridge. Consisting of large-sized rectangular travertine blocks, this large building (about 12 meters in width) is located on the continuation of the road from the city center, which is paved with building stone, of which only the south ridge is preserved. After crossing the bridge, the Martyrion of St. Philippus, located on the dominant hill, is reached. There is another octagonal structure on the northern ridge of the bridge (perhaps the baptistery). The steps end with the burial area of St. Philippus on the high hill. This area was one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Asia Minor in the pre-Byzantine period. One of the aims of the Italian archeology committee is to restore the bridge to its feet, so that the liturgical path that starts from the city and reaches Martyrion will be functional.
