Bet Nissim Synagogue

It is believed that the place of worship known as Virane or Kal de Ariva (Upper Synagogue) on Yakup Street at the top of İcadiye Street was built in the 1840s. İbrahim Hakkı Konyali states the construction date of the synagogue as 1884. The courtyard of the masonry synagogue, which has high courtyard walls on the south and west facades, is entered from Yakup Street, but its windows open onto Tenekeci Musa Street. The synagogue, which has the appearance of a single storey, is actually a two-storey building. There was also a yeshiva (academic level religious school) above this synagogue in the area known as La Virane, which was inhabited by less affluent people compared to the seaside. Some families fleeing the 1921 Dağhahamı fire were also sheltered here for a while.
