Bezirhane

The Bezirhane, which was carved into the rocks adjacent to the Ala Church, is reached through an arched entrance. Inside the Bezirhane, there is an oil pool organization made of wooden material. Dating between the 12th-13th centuries, Bezirhane has a single nave and a longitudinal rectangular plan. The frescoes on the ceiling and walls of the building with scenes of Baptism, Metamorphosis, Three Hebrew Youths in the Furnace, Deesis, Saints and Martyrs have been damaged by excessive moisture. Bezirhanes were places for the production of linseed oil used by the people of the region for lighting. After a type of grass called Izgın was crushed and processed in the bezirhanes, the oil extracted from the grass was processed to produce linseed oil. The oil was used to illuminate churches, rock-carved places and underground cities with oil lamps.
