Chunuk Bair
After the landings of the Allied Powers on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915, bloody clashes took place until the end of May. Although the Ottoman defense had to retreat a few hundred meters in the face of these attacks, which were made with the heavy artillery support of the United Navy, it showed a stubborn resistance. These advances of several hundred meters had cost the Allies' Mediterranean Expeditionary Forces abroad unexpectedly heavy losses. At the end of May, the Ottoman defense was well consolidated and the positions were locked, as in the European front.
General Sir Ian Hamilton, the commander of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Forces, is constantly requesting reinforcements from the Allied high commands in order to break this deadlock on the fronts. In the face of these demands, some units were transferred to the region in the following two months.
General Hamilton decided to use reinforcements on two fronts. With a part of the troops transferred to the region, the 2nd Division of the Anzac Corps will be reinforced and a turn attack will be launched from the north side of the Arıburnu Front. A new front will be opened by landing the majority of the reinforcements in the north of the Arıburnu Front. It was planned to start both operations on the same day, 6 August 1915.
This encirclement offensive by the Reinforced Anzac 2nd Division is known as Operation Yellow Bair. Operation Sarı Bayır aims to occupy the Kocaçimen Hill - Besim Hill - Conk Bayırı and Düztepe line, which the Allies call "Sarı Bayır". Anzac forces will advance in two branches from the left side of the front in the north direction, then turn left and continue their advance in the east direction. The right arm further south will capture Conkbayırı over Şahintepe. The left arm will split into two in Ağıldere and capture Kocaçimen Hill and Besim Hill. The attacks of the Anzac Division right-hand task force against the Ottoman positions at Chunuk Bair and the counterattacks of the Ottoman forces are known as the Battles of Chunuk Bair.
