Çimenlik Castle (Kale-i Sultaniye)

Çimenlik Castle (Kale-i Sultaniye) was built on the plain at the mouth of Sarıçay on the Anatolian coast at the narrowest point of the Dardanelles. The castle was built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet between 1461-1462 to ensure the safety of the strait. The building, measuring 110x160 meters, has a rectangular plan and consists of an outer wall and the main tower in the middle of it. Inside the walls, the place whose original function was "gunpowder shop" is used as the "Piri Reis Gallery" today, and there are two mosques apart from this one. Fatih Mosque was built during the construction of the castle. Abdulaziz Mosque was built by Sultan Abdulaziz between 1861-1876.
