Cumalıkızık The Birth of the Ottoman Empire
Bursa, which was established on the North-West foothills of Uludağ as the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, and Cumalıkızık, which was established as an Ottoman foundation village in the same period, were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. The "Bursa and Cumalıkızık: Birth of the Ottoman Empire" World Heritage Site, which is included in the World Heritage List in the cultural category, the Khans Area, which includes the Orhangazi Complex and its surroundings, the Hüdavendigar (Murad I) Complex, the Yıldırım (Bayezid I) Complex, the Green (Mehmed I) Complex. It consists of six components: Social Complex, Muradiye (Murad II) Social Complex and Cumalıkızık Village. The social complexes, which played an important role in the development of Ottoman Bursa, have survived to the present day without any damage, including mosques, madrasahs, baths, soup kitchens and tombs. These social complexes, which are the most important components of the urbanization model and each a center for social, cultural, religious and educational activities, determined the boundaries of the city and have survived until today with the neighborhoods that have developed around them over time. The urbanization model of Bursa, which is an exceptional example of the early Ottoman city, set an example for the Ottoman-Turkish cities established later. Cumalıkızık, which is the best preserved foundation village of Bursa and represents an exceptional urban planning system, has preserved its rural life with its distinguished civil architecture and living people until today. The economic relations of Cumalıkızık Village and other foundation villages around it with the inns and social complexes in the city center of Bursa, the capital city, made a significant contribution to the transformation of the Ottoman Empire from a principality to an empire with all its institutions. Bursa and Cumalıkızık, with their commercial culture that is still alive today and the continuity of rural life very close to the city, constitute a good example of the early Ottoman urban culture and lifestyle. Bursa and Cumalıkızık reflect an important phase of human history with their distinguished works.
