Elmalı Church
The history of the Elmalı Church, located in Nevşehir - Göreme Open Air Museum, is thought to date back to the middle of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century. The church has three apses, four columns and four domes. The building has a closed cross plan. The church, which can be entered through a tunnel in the north direction, can also be entered from the main entrance door in the south direction. But the entrance that attracts the most attention of the tourists is the tunnel entrance that we mentioned at the back. Red paint was applied directly to the wall in the building where the cross and geometric motifs formed the decorations of the church. The reason why the church is called Elmalı Church is that the circular object in the hand of Mikail, who is one of the four angels and manages the natural events, is likened to an apple. This depiction is located inside the dome, just in front of the main apse. Among the scenes featured here are Hz. Jesus' ascension to heaven The crucifixion of Jesus, the entrance to Jerusalem, the last supper, Hz. The burial of Jesus, baptism, depictions of saints and motifs specific to various Christian religions are included. The reason why the Elmalı Church is still intact and alive today is the restoration work carried out in the 90s.
