Enez Ayasofia Mosque
Enez, which was named Ainos in ancient times, was founded on a limestone peninsula at an altitude of 25 m from the sea, in the area where the Meriç River meets the sea on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea. Ainos was of great importance among the cities of the region, as it had sheltered harbors on the North Aegean coasts in ancient times. There are building remains from various periods in Ainos, which has become rich thanks to its trade routes and rich hinterland. The Hagia Sophia Church (Fatih Mosque), which has partially survived until today, has an important place among Byzantine religious structures with its architectural features and workmanship. The Hagia Sophia Church was built in the 12th century and was converted into a mosque after Enez was conquered by the Ottomans. The church is one of the important building remains of the middle period Byzantine architecture worth examining in terms of general building stones and bricks.
