Enez Castle
The history of Enez Castle, located in the Enez district of Edirne, dates back to Antiquity. The historian Prokopios wrote that the castle on a high hill called the Acropolis was built in ancient times to prevent barbarian raids from the Balkans. Although the construction date of the castle is not certain, the reused building materials on its walls indicate that it was built before Byzantium. We learn from the sources that Justinianus repaired the castle in the 6th century AD. The castle, whose main entrance is in the east, is entered through two gates, one from the north and one from the east. The wall, supported by 15 towers of different shapes and plans, is about 3 meters wide in places and reaches 25 meters in height. It has two polygonal towers on the side facing the sea. The one on the right has not survived. The fortification wall extending from the west draws an inward slope and joins with the wall coming from the south. Thus, this part of the castle is in the form of a half dome and strengthens the defense against the dangers that may come from the Meriç River. The angular tower in the northeast corner protrudes with another angular tower in the west direction. The building material of the castle, which was repaired in the 12th century, consisted of cut stone, brick and ancient architectural pieces. It was found in the archaeological excavations carried out in the present castle, which forms the acropolis of the city, and dates back to 4th century BC. and the pottery remains dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C. prove that the settlement here dates back to the Chalcolithic age.
