First Martyrs Memorial
The monument, located on the left at the entrance of Seddülbahir Castle, was erected in memory of our first martyrs. British and French ships started to bombard the bastions protecting the entrance of the strait on November 3, 1914, although there was no actual and official state of war regarding the Ottoman Empire yet. Gunpowder and artillery shells exploded when the arsenal of the bastion in Seddülbahir Castle was hit. As a result of this attack, 5 officers and 81 privates and non-commissioned officers were martyred at their location. On November 3, 1914, the British and French Navy bombarded Seddülbahir and Kumkale on the monument and martyred 5 officers and 81 soldiers in this place. This event is important in terms of the fact that the allies declared war against the Ottoman Empire, gave overconfidence in the idea of the Dardanelles Campaign, that the Ottoman Empire announced the necessity of reinforcing the defense of the Dardanelles, gave its first martyrs, and was the pioneer of the Dardanelles Battles. May the souls of our martyrs rest in peace… Çanakkale has not been passed. It will not be passed. 18 March 1986 statements are included. The monument was restored in 2013 by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs. The area where our martyrs who died in the said attack are actually buried is the cemetery known as Seddülbahir Ammunition Martyrdom, located on the right side of the road leading down to the port and adjacent to the wall of the castle.
