Hayrettin Pasha Mosque
Hayrettin Pasha Mosque is located in the Hayrettin Pasha District of the same name. The mosque, an old church, was built in 1850. It is one of the first churches in Ayvalık. It was converted into a mosque during the Republican Era and named Hayrettin Pasha Mosque. The name Panayia is a name given by Orthodox Christians to Mary. It was the church of the schools that provided religious education at the time. The total area of the church, which was built on a flat ground, is 4 thousand square meters, and the area of the church building is 700 square meters. It is the church with the largest floor area in the city. The height of the church is 18 meters and the height of its minaret is 32 meters. At the time, there were church parsonages and two educational buildings in the garden. Today, the church is used as a mosque and the educational buildings are used as primary schools. The church, which was built in the second half of the 9th century, was later converted into a mosque. The church has three naves and three apses. The basilica-shaped church, built without a dome, is a long building with a rectangular plan. The west and east facades of the church are wider than the other facades. The length of the church is 25.25 meters and its width is 15.80 meters. The naos in the church has three naves and the middle nave is wider. The naves end with three apses. The main apse protrudes outward on the east façade and is larger than the side apses. The main space of the church is divided into three naves with seven supporting columns. Column headings are in composite order. The religious paintings on twelve panels outside the columns were closed and painted after the church was converted into a mosque. The middle nave is covered with a barrel, narthex and side naves are covered with cross vaults. The apses have a half-conical roof on the outside and a half-dome on the inside. The narthex is reached by six steps from the east of the church and by five steps from the courtyard. The steps in the south direction were canceled after the building was converted into a mosque and the minaret of the mosque was added. Above the narthex is a flat wooden ceiling. Narthex; It forms a U shape with eight columns in the west of the church and seven columns in the north and south directions. The gallery is located on the upper floor of the two-storey narthex and can be accessed by the stairs in the northeast of the church. The church walls were built using smooth cut stone masonry technique. Stairs, window arches and jambs are also made of traditional garlic stone. Door and window bars are made of iron. Since the church was converted into a mosque, there is no iconostasis wall today. Before it was converted into a mosque, panels containing icons related to religious subjects related to Christianity were covered. After the church was converted into a mosque, the icons were first covered with thin plaster and then with paint. Additionally, a mihrab was added. Hayrettin Pasha Mosque is open for worship.
