Hevsel Gardens

Hevsel Gardens is about seven hundred hectares of fertile land located on the banks of the Tigris River, between the Diyarbakir Castle and the river valley.

Hevsel gardens, which have areas (habitats) that can meet the needs of many different species, are the largest bird paradise of the Southeastern Anatolia Region. It is home to more than 180 bird species as well as many mammals such as otters, foxes, marten, squirrels and hedgehogs.

In the valley, which is used as a station, resting, sheltering and protection place by migratory birds, the wild hawk, red hawk, bee hawk, snake eagle, sky wildebeest, little owl, kestrel and little kestrel, as well as gray hawks and pink-breasted warblers, known as native birds of the region, are located in the valley. Birds of prey such as birds of prey can be found in almost every season of the year. It is known to be home to rare summer hawks in Turkey.

Hevsel Gardens was nominated for UNESCO to be included in the World Heritage list in 2013. In 2015, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The security forces, which detected that cannabis was grown in Hevsel Gardens, destroyed 500,000 root cannabis in the operations they organized in May 2016. In the operation carried out in May 2017, 23,000 root cannabis were destroyed.
