Historical Antep Houses

Antep Houses; behind high walls, isolated from the outside spaces as much as possible, facing Hayat (courtyard). On the second floor of the houses, the cantilever projections to the street are called pavilions. Such structures, which are covered with metal on the outside, are also called pavilion houses. The main entrance of the house is provided by the entrance to life from the street. Around the living space there are places such as hearth (kitchen), hazna (cellar) and latrine. Houses were built with one, two and three floors. Two-story houses are generally dominant.

In the introverted lifestyle, women were at home all day long and life was spent in the living room, especially in the summer. There are embroidered stones on the floor of the life, flower beds on the sides of the life, and usually a pool called Gane in the middle. The upper floors of the house are reached by stairs from the outside. There are rooms, often with iwan, lined up around the sofa. The upper side of this section, called iwan in the region, is closed and its front side faces the courtyard. It is a shaded place on hot summer days. The rooms that open to the hall are multifunctional spaces. These rooms were built in a way to respond to daily life functions such as eating, sleeping and sitting. There is even a washing function at the entrance, which we call the threshold. There are also cupboard niches called kübbiye (cupboard niches) for beds and food containers. These have very beautiful woodwork called nacar.
