Karakale Castle

Karakale was built on steep cliffs at the point where the Aras River draws the border between Turkey and Armenia, 10 km away from the city center. It was built by the Seljuks at the end of the 12th century. There are remains of a large settlement in a large area between the castle walls and the towers. A few ramparts and two large towers have survived from here. Particularly surviving in this area, where plenty of ceramics from the Seljuk, Urartian and Early Bronze Ages can be seen, the structure has a strategic importance as it was built both at a passing point of the Aras River and on the road opening to the Iğdır Plain.
