Kefrum Castle is a historical fortress located within the borders of Maçka district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Positioned at a strategic point overlooking the Altındere Valley, the castle is considered one of the important defensive and observation structures of the region.

History

The exact date of construction of Kefrum Castle is unknown; however, it is believed to date back to the Middle Ages. Throughout history, the region came under the control of the Roman, Byzantine, and Trebizond Empires, during which periods the castle was used for defensive purposes. The castle was built to control trade and transportation routes passing through the Altındere Valley.

Architectural Features

The castle was constructed on steep rocky terrain, making use of the natural topography for defense. The remaining structures include sections of fortification walls, watchtowers, and defensive elements. Locally sourced stone materials were used in its construction. Today, the castle is partially ruined.

Location and Access

Kefrum Castle is located close to the center of Maçka district and lies within the vicinity of the Altındere Valley National Park. Due to the rugged terrain, access to the castle requires hiking.

Today, Kefrum Castle attracts attention for its historical and cultural value and appeals particularly to visitors interested in nature walks and historical tourism. There are currently no known restoration works, and the remaining structures are in need of conservation.
