Kerkenes Ancient City

The first surface surveys in the Kerkenes Mountain Ancient City in the Şahmuratlı Village of the Sorgun District of Yozgat began in 1993, transformed into a museum-based participatory research in 1998-2000, and excavations and research have continued under the leadership of British national Dr. Geoffrey Summers since 2001. Although it is estimated that the city was founded by the Medes in the Iron Age in 600 BC, the discovery of Phrygian inscriptions in the 2003 excavation season also indicates that the city may have been a Phrygian settlement. The city's approximately 7 km long city walls form a settlement area of 2.5 square km. It is thought that this is the city recorded as Pteria in ancient sources.
