Kilis Synagogue
There is a street that runs behind the Muallak Mosque next to the Sabah Bazaar, which has been mentioned in Kilis for a long time and where shopping is still going on today. As you will ask and get answers from those in the know, the building that many people think is a remnant of a church is actually the only synagogue of Kilis, hidden behind a long and high courtyard wall on the right as you enter the street. Until 1958, this was the place of worship of the Jewish community in Kilis, which numbered more than five hundred and mostly immigrated to Israel. When you enter through the gate, which is closed today, there are adjacent buildings lined up on three sides of the courtyard. The two-story building on the left, which we will mention first, has no indication of what it was used for. However, it is possible that the 'rabbi hakal' or the servant 'shamash', who was responsible for various works, may have used this part as a residence and resided there.
