Kireçtepe Gendarmerie Martyrdom And Memorial
Kireçtepe Gendarmerie Martyrdom, one of the real martyrdoms on the Gallipoli Peninsula, is located on the summit of Kapanca Hill and was created during the battles. Next to the graves, there is the Kireçtepe Gendarmerie Monument, which was built by placing empty cannon shells on an old stone. This monument is surrounded by a low stone wall. The inscriptions on the tombstones are in Ottoman Turkish. This monument is one of three monuments erected on the peninsula to commemorate the successful Turkish defense after the withdrawal of foreign forces. The monument and the cemetery were repaired in 1996 by the Eceabat Gendarmerie Forces. Colonel Mustafa Kemal came here during the war, visited the cemetery and congratulated the gendarmerie soldiers for their efforts. Another monument found here is the Kireçtepe Inscription designed by Architect Ahmet Gülgönen. The stone-covered inscription was erected in 1985, 50 m east of the martyrdom. The inscription is as follows: 6/8 Ağustos 1915’te Gelibolu ve Bursa Jandarma Taburları’nın kahramanca çarpışan üç bölüğü, iki tugay gücüne ulaşan İngiliz kuvvetlerini Karakol Dağı ve Kireçtepe’de durdurup Anafartalar Grubu’nun kuzey yanını korumuştur.
