Künç Bridge

The bridge connecting Bayezitpaşa and Şamlar neighborhoods on Yeşilırmak is one of the Seljuk works. It was built in the 12th century by Hundi (Hondi) Hatun, the daughter of Sultan Mesud II according to some sources and his mother according to others. The distinctive feature of the bridge, which was built of cut stone and brick, is the width of the arches of almost the same size connecting the three large piers. On the west side of the abutments, facing the direction of the river flow, there are selyarans, one of which is angular and the others round, which help the bridge withstand strong water currents. Fragments of a spolia sarcophagus can be seen on the middle abutment. The bridge is said to be named after Hundi Hatun. The name Hundi was first spelled "Kundi" and then "Kunç" or "Künç" over time. The bridge is also known as "Bird Bridge".
