Lagina Ancient City

The fame of the Lagina sanctuary, which was an important cult center of the Carians, has survived to our time, and this region is still known as Leyne. According to the remains found in Lagina and its surroundings, the settlements in the region date back to the 3rd millennium BC. After the Old Bronze Age tombs unearthed in the Yarbaşı area, the earliest finds in the region belong to the Submiken Period. Recent research shows that the region has been inhabited continuously from the ancient Bronze Age (3000 BC) to the present day. Starting from the 8th century BC around Lagina, small settlements began to grow and the number of new settlements began to increase. As a result of this development, sacred areas were also reconstructed and monumental large structures were built over time. The Seleucid kings made the Lagina sanctuary the religious center and the city of Stratonikeia (which is 12 km away from here today) the political center of the region with great reconstruction works. As we learn from the inscriptions still present in Lagina and on the walls of the Stratonikeia bouleuterion, these two cities were connected to each other by a sacred road.
