Mecidiye Bastion

The military Erzurum Bastions, which were built to protect and defend Erzurum during the Ottoman - Russian War that took place in 1877-1878, were first built in the 18th century between the war between the Ottomans and Iran. It is known that 22 of these strategic structures were built in total, which were built on the high hills around the city in order to have a wide view. There are headquarters buildings, training grounds, military shelters, ambush rooms and dining halls inside the bastion. Of course, the size of the bastions can vary depending on their location.

The most important of the Erzurum Bastions are the Aziziye Bastion and the Mecidiye Bastion. The tops of the bastions, all of which were built of stone, were covered with a thick layer of soil. These bastions had a critical place in stopping the advance of the Russians during the war.
